Even though one of our past features was removed because someone after the fact determined that a movie was still copyrighted even though it was posted elsewhere on the archive, we will not be sidetracked! This week, we strongly suggest you get a good parking slot for our "Horror Head" Double Feature. After a hearty welcome and a classic Thanksgiving cartoon, we proudly present the 1959 gore classic "The Brain That Wouldn't Die", which is followed by a brief intermission and...

One of the most unique and uniquely odd film I have seen. Considering when and where it was made, the production values are almost unbelievably high. It seems to have been made in occupied France, with the clear intent to blame the Freemasons as dupes and/or masterminds in engineering the outbreak of war. While proving the premise seems like it would be an uphill battle, the film demonstrates great care in citing historical events within France to back this up. Citing Freemason infiltration...

Made by the Jam Handy organization for Chevrolet, "Be An A*C*E* Driver" is a campy driver's ed film featuring Miss Jr. Miss for 1967, Rosemarie Dunaway Trible of Arkansas.   The "A.C.E. system" centers on the words Alert, Courteous, and Education.  Features quite a bit of coverage of Chevrolet automobile products from the late 1960s as well as hilarious campy footage of driver's education, and slot car racing. This beautiful circa Easter 1960 Kodachrome color, silent film, was shot by an amateur filmmaker. It crosses the line between a professional documentary and a home movie, in that it is impressively put together and extremely well shot. It features impressive views of Manhattan. Dating on the film is not 100% certain but the Janet Leigh film "The Vikings" seen advertised at 6:49 was released in 1958. The film "Portrait in Black" with Lana Turner seen advertised at 7:00 was...

In the depths of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised the American people a “New Deal.” Over the decade 1933-43, a constellation of federally sponsored programs put millions of jobless Americans back to work and helped to revive a moribund economy. The result was a rich landscape of public works across the nation, often of outstanding beauty, utility and craftsmanship. No city, town, or rural area was untouched by the New Deal. LibriVox recording of THE GILDED AGE, A TALE OF TODAY, by MARK TWAIN & CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER. Read by JOHN GREENMAN. Originally published in 1873, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today is the only novel Twain co-wrote (C.D. Warner was a good friend and neighbor of the Clemens family in Hartford, and the collaboration sprang from their wive's challenge and encouragement). The title, "The Gilded Age" became synonymous with graft, materialism and corruption in public life, which are well...

A live tv production of Frankenstein from the anthology series Tales of Tomorrow. Legend has it that Lon Chaney Jr. (playing the monster) was unaware that it wasn't a rehearsal, so rather than break up props as planned, he simply put them down. While he certainly does some odd things with the chairs and appears to ask a question to somebody off stage (at 12:04), he does break up some props, and certainly isn't the only one flubbing (or was 'elictricigate' a word in the day of Mary Shelley?)...

An amazing short by an "orchestra" of vibraphone players. Some viewers have noted that this film seems to be a mirror image of how things are supposed to be. This is because original Soundie films were printed backwards so that they could appear correct when played in the Panoram machine (an early film jukebox).

LibriVox recording of Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) , by Jerome K. Jerome. Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) , published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was intended initially to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history of places along the route, but the humorous elements eventually took over, to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental...

A young boy takes a fantasy trip to the "Land of Lessons" where Professor Sir Hillary Von Carp and two frogs named What and Tadoo teach him how to protect himself from strangers with four basic rules: Say No, Get Away, Tell Someone and Sometimes, Yell. Combing live action and puppets, in a humorous, but straight-forward look at the lures strangers use to entice children and the "un-oh feeling" they could experience  with certain touches even from people they know

LibriVox recording of Glugs of Gosh by C. J. Dennis, in the public domain. First published in 1917, The Glugs of Gosh satirizes Australian life at the start of the twentieth century - but the absurdities it catalogs seem just as prevalent at the start of the twenty-first. The foolishness of kings, the arrogance of the elite, the gullibility of crowds, the pride of the self-righteous, the unthinking following of tradition - all find themselves the targets of C. J. Dennis' biting wit. (Summary by...

I had only several members of my family with literary backgrounds and one was Lois Rather, a cousin from my parent's generation. She was a retired teacher and an accomplished writer. She and her husband Cliff ran the Rather Press which did limited print runs using a letter press. During one vist she suggested that I might like H.L Mencken. I always took such suggestions from Lois seriously. I picked up a few collections of his essays at a used book store and found she was right. This reading of...
